Walter Brueggemann on March 4, 2018

Mar, 4, 2018

One of the most influential Bible interpreters of the 21st century and author of more than 100 books, the Reverend Dr. Walter Brueggemann will present the 2018 Willard Lecture at First Presbyterian Church on Sunday, March 4, 2018, at 5 p.m.

Tickets are available now online.

Dr. Brueggemann’s topic will be God, Money, Neighbor: The Economics of Compassion, exploring the Bible’s take on an economy based on abundance rather than scarcity. He contrasts a tendency in today’s culture to extract wealth from the vulnerable with an alternative practice that calls us to envision an economy based on grace and gratitude.

“In the alternative neighborhood economy, we understand what we have is a gift that is properly shared,” Dr. Brueggemann said. “It is a dangerous, subversive alternative, and it is the truth of our life.”

The author of more than 100 books, Dr. Brueggemann is an ordained minister who makes the pages of the Bible come alive through his prophetic wisdom, explanation and interpretation. He is currently the William Marcellus McPheeters professor emeritus of Old Testament at Columbia Theological Seminary.
