PW Retreat 2018

Apr, 27, 2018

Experience rest, renewal and spiritual growth at the annual PW (Presbyterian Women) Retreat at Kanuga Conference Center in Hendersonville, NC, on April 27-29.

Registration will be primarily online this year and brochures will not be mailed out. You can register now online. Registration materials can be requested by calling the church at 704.332.5123. The deadline to register is March 16.

The retreat leader will be Dr. Frances Taylor Gench, a fifth-generation Presbyterian minister and Professor of Biblical Interpretation at Union Theological Seminary in Richmond, VA. A warm, enthusiastic and engaging presenter, she is the author of six books, including Encounters with Jesus: Studies in the Gospel of John, which is being read and discussed by several PW Circles this year. She is a parish associate at The New York Avenue Presbyterian Church in Washington, D.C. We are honored to have Dr. Gench as our 2018 Retreat Leader.

The topic for Dr. Gench’s talk is When the Bible Raises Your Blood Pressure: Faithful Wrestling with Challenging Texts. The Bible is full of embarrassing, offensive, problematic texts that present serious interpretive challenges for contemporary Christian faith and practice.  Should they be repudiated? Discarded? Silenced? Or are there perhaps more effective and faithful ways of handling them?  This year’s retreat will tackle the importance of engaging them directly and publicly, with the expectation that we may encounter the living God in our conversation with them. Texts in Paul’s letters that have proved oppressive in the lives of many Christian women will serve as test cases. Join us to wrestle with such texts, to consider interpretive strategies for engaging them with integrity, and to reflect on our understandings of biblical authority.
