Dear Parents:
One of the remarkable aspects of the ministry of Jesus was his relationship with children. More than anyone around him, he saw in children the reflection of the kingdom of God. Never one to push children away, Jesus made it a point to gather them to himself.
One of the most important aspects of the ministry of First Presbyterian Church is our ministry to children. That ministry takes a number of forms, from the Child Development Center to the Weekday School to the church school. An essential part of that ministry is our conviction that faith must be passed from generation to generation.
This booklet is an attempt to take seriously the church's ministry to its children. As you will see from its contents, it deals with the goals and purposes of the education program for children at First Presbyterian Church. Our deepest appreciation is expressed to those who worked so hard to make this possible. Our hope is that you will take advantage of it.
With every good wish to each family, I am
Sincerely yours,
William P. Wood
"Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see." Hebrews 11:1
The faith journey of each individual is a personal, unique experience. Even though the development of faith is a personal journey, the community of believers should support, nurture, and challenge one another in our growing faith. Parents are the principal guides in their children's faith development, with the church community providing a committed backdrop. This booklet is an attempt to clarify the role of the church community to parents and children.
Faith is not simply knowledge or an understanding of who God is and what God does. Faith is an action and a relationship we partake in as a response to the God who is an integral part of our lives. This booklet gives us a guide for sharing the faith within our families and the church community.
We pray that its use may both enrich and nurture the users.
"Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.
"Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.
"Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.
"Blessed are the merciful, for they will receive mercy.
"Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.
"Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.
"Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
"Blessed are you when people revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you." (The Beatitudes)

PSALM 23
The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want;he makes me lie down in green pastures.
He leads me beside still waters; he restores my soul.
He leads me in paths of righteousness for his name's sake.
Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,
I fear no evil; for thou art with me;
thy rod and thy staff, they comfort me.
Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of my enemies;
thou anointest my head with oil, my cup overflows.
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life;
and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord for ever.
PSALM 100
Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the lands!Serve the Lord with gladness!
Come into his presence with singing!
Know that the Lord is God!
It is he that made us, and we are his;
we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture.
Enter his gates with thanksgiving,
and his courts with praise!
Give thanks to him, bless his name!
For the Lord is good; his steadfast love endures for ever,
and his faithfulness to all generations.
THE LORD'S PRAYER (Matthew 6:9&endash;15)
Our Father who art in heavenHallowed be thy name
Thy kingdom come,
Thy will be done,
On earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread;
And forgive us our debts,
As we also have forgiven our debtors.
And lead us not into temptation,
But deliver us from evil,
For thine is the kingdom,
And the power,
And the glory forever,
Amen.
(Statements of our Faith)
THE APOSTLES' CREED
I BELIEVE in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth,
And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead.
I BELIEVE in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.
WE BELIEVE in one God, the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and of all things visible and invisible;
AND IN ONE LORD JESUS CHRIST, the only&endash;begotten Son of God, begotten of the Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, Very God of Very God, begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father, by whom all things were made; who for us men, and for our salvation, came down from heaven, and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the Virgin Mary, and was made man, and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate. He suffered and was buried, and the third day he rose again according to the Scriptures, and ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of the Father. And he shall come again with glory to judge both the quick and the dead, whose kingdom shall have no end.
AND WE BELIEVE in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and Giver of Life, who proceedeth from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son together is worshipped and glorified, who spoke by the prophets. And we believe one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the remission of sins. And we look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.
(Recognition of Trinity)
Praise God, from whom all blessings flow;
Praise Him, all creatures here below;
Praise Him above, ye heavenly host;
Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.
Amen.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Ghost;
As it was in the beginning,
is now and ever shall be,
World without end.
Amen. Amen.

Hymn 304
Jesus loves me! This I know,
For the Bible tells me so;
Little ones to Him belong;
They are weak, but He is strong.
Refrain:
Yes, Jesus loves me!
Yes, Jesus loves me!
Yes, Jesus loves me!
The Bible tells me so.
Jesus loves me! This I know,
As He loved so long ago,
Taking children on His knee,
Saying, "Let them come to me."
Yet she on earth has union with God the Three in One,
And mystic sweet communion with those whose rest is won:
O happy ones and holy! Lord give us grace that we,
Like them the meek and lowly, may live eternally.
For the Beauty of the Earth
Hymn 473
For the beauty of the earth, for the glory of the skies,
For the love which from our birth over and around us lies,
Refrain:
Lord of all, to Thee we raise
This our hymn of grateful praise.
For the wonder of each hour of the day and of the night,
Hill and vale, and tree and flower, sun and moon,
and stars of light,
For the joy of ear and eye, for the heart and mind's delight,
For the mystic harmony linking sense to sound and sight,
For the joy of human love, brother, sister, parent, child,
Friends on earth, and friends above, for all gentle thoughts and mild,
For Thy church that evermore lifteth holy hands above,
Offering up on every shore her pure sacrifice of love.
Jesus Loves the Little Children
Jesus loves the little children
All the children of the world.
Red and yellow, black and white
They are precious in His sight.
Jesus loves the little children of the world.
Away in a Manger
Hymn 25
Away in a manger, no crib for His bed,
The little Lord Jesus laid down His sweet head.
The stars in the sky looked down where He lay,
The little Lord Jesus, asleep on the hay.
The cattle are lowing, the poor Baby wakes,
But little Lord Jesus, no crying He makes.
I love Thee, Lord Jesus, look down from the sky,
And stay by my side until morning is nigh.
Be near me, Lord Jesus; I ask Thee to stay
Close by me forever and love me, I pray.
Bless all the dear children in Thy tender care,
And fit us for heaven to live with Thee there.
Infant Holy, Infant Lowly
Hymn 37
Infant holy, infant lowly, for His bed a cattle stall;
Oxen lowing, little knowing Christ the babe is Lord of all.
Swift are winging angels singing, noels ringing,
Tidings bringing: Christ the babe is Lord of all.
Flocks were sleeping; shepherds keeping vigil till the morning new.
Saw the glory, heard the story, tidings of a gospel true.
Thus rejoicing, free from sorrow, praises voicing
Greet the morrow: Christ the babe was born for you.
Seek Ye First
Hymn 333
Seek ye first the kingdom of God
and His righteousness,
And all these things shall be added unto you.
Allelu, alleluia!
Ask and it shall be given unto you,
seek and you shall find,
Knock and the door shall be opened unto you.
Allelu, alleluia!
Gentle Mary Laid Her Child
Hymn 27
Gentle Mary laid her child lowly in a manger;
There He lay, the undefiled, to the world a stranger.
Such a babe in such a place, can He be the Savior?
Ask the saved of all the race who have found His favor.
Angels sang about His birth, wise men sought and found Him;
Heaven's star shone brightly forth, glory all around Him.
Shepherds saw the wondrous sight, heard the angels singing;
All the plains were lit that night, all the hills were ringing.
Gentle Mary laid her child lowly in a manger;
He is still the undefiled, but no more a stranger.
Son of God, of humble birth, beautiful the story;
Praise His name in all the earth, hail the King of glory!
God of the Sparrow
Hymn 272
God of the sparrow God of the whale
God of the swirling stars
How does the creature say Awe
How does the creature say Praise
God of the earthquake God of the storm
God of the trumpet blast
How does the creature cry Woe
How does the creature cry Save
God of the rainbow God of the cross
God of the empty grave
How does the creature say Grace
How does the creature say Thanks
God of the hungry God of the sick
God of the prodigal
How does the creature say Care
How does the creature say Life
God of the neighbor God of the foe
God of the pruning hook
How does the creature say Love
How does the creature say Peace
God of the ages God of the hand
God of the loving heart
How do your children say Joy
How do your children say Home
Joyful, Joyful We Adore Thee
Hymn 464
Joyful, joyful, we adore Thee, God of glory, Lord of love;
Hearts unfold like flowers before Thee, opening to the sun above.
Melt the clouds of sin and sadness; drive the gloom of doubt away;
Giver of immortal gladness, fill us with the light of day.
All Thy works with joy surround Thee, earth and heaven reflect Thy rays,
Stars and angels sing around Thee, center of unbroken praise.
Field and forest, vale and mountain, flowery meadow, flashing sea,
Chanting bird and flowing fountain, call us to rejoice in Thee.
Mortals, join the happy chorus which the morning stars began;
Love divine is reigning o'er us, joining all in heaven's plan.
Ever singing, march we onward, victors in the midst of strife,
Joyful music leads us sunward in the triumph song of life.
I Sing a Song of the Saints of God
Hymn 364
I sing a song of the saints of God, patient and brave and true,
Who toiled and fought and lived and died for the Lord they loved and knew.
And one was a doctor, and one was a queen, and one was a shepherdess on the green:
They were all of them saints of God, and I mean, God helping, to be one too.
They loved their Lord so dear, so dear, and God's love made them strong;
And they followed the right, for Jesus' sake, the whole of their good lives long.
And one was a soldier, and one was a priest, and one was slain by a fierce wild beast:
And there's not any reason, no, not the least, why I shouldn't be one too.
They lived not only in ages past, there are hun&endash;dreds of thousands still;
The world is bright with the joyous saints who love to do Jesus' will.
You can meet them in school, or in lanes, or at sea, in church, or in trains, or in shops, or at tea;
For the saints of God are just folk like me, and I mean to be one too.
This Is My Father's World
Hymn 293
This is my Father's world, and to my listening ears
All nature sings, and round me rings the music of the spheres.
This is my Father's world: I rest me in the thought
Of rocks and trees, of skies and seas; His hand the wonders wrought.
This is my Father's world: Oh, let me ne'er forget
That though the wrong seems oft so strong, God is the Ruler yet.
This is my Father's world: The battle is not done;
Jesus who died shall be satisfied, and earth and heaven be one.
All Things Bright and Beautiful
Hymn 267
Refrain:
All things bright and beautiful,
all creatures great and small,
All things wise and wonderful:
The Lord God made them all.
Each little flower that opens, each little bird that sings:
God made their glowing colors, God made their tiny wings.
The purpleheaded mountain, the river running by,
The sunset, and the morning that brightens up the sky,
The cold wind in the winter, the pleasant summer sun,
The ripe fruits in the garden: God made them every one.
God gave us eyes to see them, and lips that we might tell
How great is God Almighty, who has made all things well.
Come, Christians, Join to Sing
Hymn 150
Come, Christians, join to sing Alleluia! Amen!
Loud praise to Christ our King; Alleluia! Amen!
Let all, with heart and voice, before His throne rejoice;
Praise is His gracious choice; Alleluia! Amen!
Come, lift your hearts on high; Alleluia! Amen!
Let praises fill the sky; Alleluia! Amen!
He is our guide and friend; to us He'll condescend;
His love shall never end; Alleluia! Amen!
Praise yet our Christ again; Alleluia! Amen!
Life shall not end the strain; Alleluia! Amen!
On heaven's blissful shore His goodness we'll adore,
Singing forevermore, "Alleluia! Amen!"
Come Sing, O Church, in Joy!
Hymn 430
Come sing, O church, in joy!
Come join, O church, in song!
For Christ the Lord has led us through the ages long!
Refrain:
In bold accord, come celebrate the journey now and praise the Lord!
Long years have come and gone, and still God reigns supreme,
Empowering us to catch the vision, dream the dream!
Let courage be our friend, let wisdom be our guide,
As we in mission magnify the Crucified!
Come sing, O church, in joy!
Come join, O church, in song!
For Christ the Lord has triumphed o'er the ages long!
Let All Things Now Living
Hymn 554
Let all things now living a song of thanksgiving
to God our creator triumphantly raise;
Who fashioned and made us, protected and stayed us,
By guiding us on to the end of our days.
God's banners are o'er us, pure light goes before us,
A pillar of fire shining forth in the night:
Till shadows have vanished, all fearfulness banished,
As forward we travel from light into Light.
By law God enforces the stars in their courses,
the sun in its orbit obediently shine;
The hills and the mountains, the rivers and fountains,
The depths of the ocean proclaim God divine.
We, too, should be voicing our love and rejoicing
with glad adoration, a song let us raise:
Till all things now living unite in thanksgiving,
to God in the highest, hosanna and praise.
The Church's One Foundation
Hymn 442
The church's one foundation is Jesus Christ her Lord;
She is His new creation by water and the word;
From heaven He came and sought her to be His holy bride;
With His own blood He bought her, and for her life He died.
Elect from every nation, yet one o'er all the earth,
Her charter of salvation one Lord, one faith, one birth;
One holy name she blesses, partakes one holy food,
And to one hope she presses, with every grace endued.
Mid toil and tribulation, and tumult of her war,
She waits the consummation of peace forevermore;
Till with the vision glorious her longing eyes are blest,
And the great church victorious shall be the church at rest.
