The Weekday School offers many opportunities for children and their families to enjoy special events together, as well as offering several opportunities for parents to benefit from social gatherings and parent education and training.
Family Events
Family Fun Night
An evening in September or October for families to gather for a box supper and an entertaining concert by a children’s musician ( performers have included Roger Day, Thomas Moore, and Peter and Ellen Allard).
Music Program and Luncheon
In April, the children of the 4s and TK classes present a spectacular musical performance for their parents and grandparents in the Sanctuary. The program concludes with a luncheon in the Fellowship Hall. In May, the children of the 3s classes also perform a spectacular music program for their parents and grandparents on the stage of the Fellowship Hall, followed by lunch.
End of Year Picnic for 4s and TK Families
A fun and special way to celebrate the end of the school year on the beautiful and spacious front lawn of the church. The 4s and TK children bring their parents and siblings to enjoy an inflatable jump castle, inflatable giant slide, and inflatable obstacle course. Many other outdoor games and contests are offered as well, and the evening ends with a fried chicken picnic supper on the lawn.
Parent Events:
Kindergarten Readiness Program
A program for parents of 4s and TK students to inform and prepare them for the kindergarten search process.
Speaker Programs
The Weekday School offers a variety of educational programs for parents to explore and discuss topics of interest to parents of young children. Some of these topics have included sibling rivalry, positive discipline, sensory integration, sex education for preschoolers, and speech and language development of young children. These programs are presented by professionals who specialize in these different areas.
Class Get-Togethers
During the fall and spring, the volunteer coordinators for each class plan ways for either parents to get together on an informal basis or for both parents and children to get together at a park or someone's home. These gatherings build community and further develop friendships within each class.
Parent Socials
In the fall or spring, the school sponsors a party for parents at the home of one of our WDS parents. Heavy hors d'oeuvres and beverages are provided by a caterer. These parties provide a wonderful opportunity to meet new friends and be with lots of old friends and have a “night out” without the kids!
Other School Events
B
ook and Toy Fairs
Fairs are held twice a year at local book and toy stores as in-store fairs. 20% of all sales are donated to the Weekday School by the store, and this revenue gives the school additional funding to purchase new toys, teaching aids, and books for the classrooms.
School-Wide Drives to Serve the Community
Each spring, our school launches a big campaign to collect new and gently-used books to donate to local schools in our community who serve some of Charlotte’s neediest children. The Weekday School also collects art supplies and snacks for Freedom School, a summer school housed at First Presbyterian to serve elementary-age children who need an “academic boost” during the summer months. Our school also collects coats, hats, gloves, and backpacks for the homeless shelter each fall, and collects food for the Loaves and Fishes Food Pantry located at our church. These drives give our families the opportunity to give back to the community and for young children to learn to share with others.
Field Day
Each spring the 4s and TK children gather on the front lawn of the church for a fabulous day of games, events, contests, and popsicles. Event stations are located all around the front lawn, and the children have the grandest time participating in all these fun games!
Week of the Young Child
A week designated by NAEYC to focus on education opportunities for young children. The WDS offers many special events during this week for the children and the parents.
