In addition to gathering for worship, First Church offers educational opportunities on Sunday morning from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. Class topics range from Bible studies to Christian ethics to theology. Please join us for any of the opportunities to learn and grow. While ongoing classes provide learning and fellowship opportunities, special classes and special studies are offered throughout the year.
On September 5th and 12th: Dusting off the Bible.
Grab your Bible from the bookshelf and come kick off the new Fall semester! The Reverend Wes Barry and Reverend Katie Crowe will present new lenses through which we can faithfully read scripture. These tools will help prepare us for the exciting educational opportunities coming this Fall.
SEPTEMBER 19th - Fall classes begin!!
As the Christian Education Team is excited about the Sunday morning offerings that will begin on September 19th, you will notice that this fall each class will bear the name of its topic, rather than the specific name of the community of leaders. The hope behind this small change is twofold:
1. As the focus of the class centers on a specific topic, each opportunity to learn
becomes more open and inviting to new faces, age groups, ideas and
perspectives.
2. A greater variety of participants will bring not only fresh insight and dialogue to
the specific topic but also new relationships within and beyond First Church.
Thank you for your excitement for the fall lineup and we look forward to faithful and fruitful opportunities to learn and grow at First Church!
Celebration of Discipline
- With themes from Richard Foster’s book of the same name, this series will explore different aspects of the Christian life. With a variety of leaders, the class will unpack the disciplines that help nurture and sustain the Outward, Inward and Corporate realms of our spiritual lives. Such topics as " prayer," " study," " worship" and " service" will be just a few of the gifts that can guide and nurture our ever-evolving relationship with Jesus Christ.
- Classroom: Room S-202 (Lemma Howerton Room)
Open Forum Discussion
- Each week, this class will gather around a particular issue ranging from contemporary/societal issues to biblical studies in an effort to critically engage how we as Christians can approach and respond to the world around us. As the name implies, this class is discussion based and welcomes all age groups who wish to unpack and faithfully respond to the social and religious world in which we find ourselves.
- Classroom: Room S-203 (Pattie Cole Room)
The Inescapable God
- This class is targeted for adults interested in discovering the Bible as a way to develop and reinforce a strong Christian faith for life. This class focuses on the NIV Standard Lesson Quarterly, with Christian Commitment in Today's World the main topic for the summer.
- Currently: Following the Standard Lesson curriculum, this class will be unpacking and engaging sacred texts from Exodus as well as the Psalms as they glimpse The Inescapable God. Led by a variety of class leaders and outside speakers, the group will continue to learn, celebrate and grow into a closer relationship with God through the intentional and faithful exploration of Holy Scripture.
- Classroom: Chapel
The Journey: Following Christ through the Gospels
- Jesus called to his disciples to “Come and Follow Me.” This course will follow the life of Christ as he moves throughout the region teaching and preaching. Each week we will explore a specific story from the Gospels and discover how His Journey can apply to our modern lives.
- Classroom: P-205
The Wired Word
- Where is the Good News in the Daily News? How does our faith shape the way that we encounter the headlines? Does our faith even matter outside of Sunday morning? After receiving a current event each week by email, the class will gather on Sunday mornings to discuss that topic through the lens of the Gospel and our tradition. This class is so cool it even has theme music. If you would like to be added to the email list, please email the education office at jploch@firstpres-charlotte.org
- Classroom: Room P-206
