DAVIDSON COLLEGE UPCOMING EVENT

BARBARA BROWN TAYLOR LECTURE

Tuesday, February 7 at 7:30 p.m. in the Duke Family Performance Hall of the Alvarez College Union

The Reverend Dr. Barbara Brown Taylor is the 2012 Staley Distinguished Christian lecturer at Davidson College.  Dr. Taylor's lecture is entitled "Learning to Walk in the Dark:  The Ancient Way of Unknowing."  The event is free and open to the public.  Tickets are not required. 

An ordained Episcopal priest, Dr. Taylor taught for many years at Columbia Theological Seminary in Decatur, GA and is currently the Burman Professor of Religion at Piedmont College in Demorest, GA.  In 1996 she was named one of the twelve 'most effective' preachers in the English-speaking world by Baylor University.  Dr. Taylor has authored many articles and twelve books on Christian spirituality, including the New York Times bestseller "An Altar in the World" (2009) and "The Preaching Life" (1993).

Cornel West is a prominent and provocative democratic intellectual.  He is the "Class of 1943 University Professor" at Princeton University.  He graduated Magna Cum Laude from Harvard in three years and obtained his M.A. and Ph.D. in Philosophy at Princeton.  He has taught at Union Theological Seminary, Yale, Harvard and the University of Paris.  He has written 19 books and edited 13 books.  He is best known for his classic Race Matters, Democracy Matters, and his new memoir, Brother West:  Living and Loving Out Loud.  He appears frequently on the Bill Maher Show, Colbert Report, CNN and C-Span as well as on Tavis Smiley's PBS TV Show.  He is also co-host of the popular radio show "Smiley & West" heard on PRI around the country.The Smiley and West radio show is a highly acclaimed progressive program.He made his film debut in "The Matrix" - and was the commentator (with Ken Wilbur) on the official trilogy released in 2004.  He also has appeared in over 25 documentaries and films including" Examined Life," "Call & Response," and "Sidewalk and Stand."
