Bible Studies

An area of interest for growth from the congregation is Bible study.  These are designed to be a more intimate study of the Bible.  The following is a list of formal groups; however, many more groups meet at the Church or other facilities.

MarkKairos:  A new Bible study led by Dr. Miller.

This will be offered at three different times [an evening, a morning, and an afternoon] starting this fall, on the first and third weeks of the month, as noted below. Each will follow the same curriculum so that, while members will find a regular slot that fits their individual schedule, the option is there for attending at a different one during any week.

The Kairos classes will begin the week of September 16, 2007 and will be offered (a) the first and third Sundays, from 6:30pm to 8pm, (b) the first and third Wednesdays from 10:15am to 11:45am, and (c) the first and third Thursdays from 1:00pm to 2:30 pm.

The initial topic of the classes is to be Mark This! A Reading of Mark’s Gospel.

Men’s Bible Study:  A weekly study that meets Friday at 7:00 am. The coordinator is Robert Brinkley.

Women’s Bible Study:  The Tuesday Morning Bible Study begins its new session each year in September meeting weekly from 11:45 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. in the Lemma Howerton Room (S202).

In 2007-2008 we will study  Paul’s letter to the Romans which has spoken powerfully and personally to Christians since the earliest days of Christianity and has impacted the lives of such noted men as Augustine (386),  Martin Luther (1515),  John Wesley (1738), and in the 20th century, Karl Barth, who referred to “the mighty voice of Paul”.  Luther called Romans “really the chief part of the New Testament, and…truly the purest gospel”.  Calvin wrote, “if we have gained a true understanding of this Epistle we have an open door to the most profound treasures of Scripture.”

Surely Romans and “the mighty voice of Paul” speak to us today.   Please join us as we study this most challenging and powerful Epistle seeking to understand Paul’s message to the Romans, what he is saying to us here and now, and how we are to respond. Led by member Carolee Keener in a lecture/discussion format, participants will supplement the reading of the Scriptures with the use of the New American Commentary book on Romans by Robert Mounce.  Books will be available at the first class.
